What is a facial and why do I need one?

A facial is a deep and thorough cleaning of the skin followed by masques, massage, extractions and various other treatments deemed necessary to achieve the goals established during consultation. Exfoliation is usually key in this process. There is steam, warm towels and professional products used throughout. The client is laying comfortably on a treatment bed, in a smock, fully draped. We assure you that you will be educated and informed about the needs of your skin.

What is a peel?

Cosmedix Metabolic Peels $175  These peels work with your skin to stimulate the turnover process in a more gentle manner though they are the most intensive treatments we offer. Active ingredients such as Vitamins A & C, fruit acids, enzymes and lactic acids of varying strengths make up the range of peels we use. Conditions such as melasma, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, mild to moderate acne scarring and texture can be treated. Proper home care and SPF usage is essential to the success of your treatments! We strongly recommend a series of peels for maximum benefit. You will leave with the peel (and sunscreen) on your skin with instructions for removal 4-6 hours later.

WAXING

What kind of wax do you use?

We use the absolute best strip and hard waxes available.

What is hard wax?

Hard wax is a low temperature wax used for coarser hairs or sensitive skin. It hardens as it dries on the skin, shrink wrapping itself around the hairs to be removed. It is more gentle than strip wax because it is not sticky after hardening, therefore leaving the dermis more intact.

How long does my hair need to be?

This varies from person to person but in general it is recommended that you wait at least ten days after shaving and at least three weeks in between waxes.

How long does waxing last?

Most clients, after establishing a good waxing routine, can expect a couple of weeks of very smooth skin followed by a regrowth period of a week or two. With continued waxing you will notice a decrease in the amount of hair overall.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t wax?

Possibly. If you are currently or recently on a prescription exfoliant such as Retin-A, Accutane, Tazarac or Differin (to name just a few), you must inform your esthetician. These products drastically thin the skin making it susceptible to damage, burning and lifting from waxing. In the case of eyebrows we are happy to tweeze instead of wax if this applies to you.

What is a Betweeny wax?

As with all of our waxing services, a Betweeny wax is whatever you want it to be. But in general this refers to more than a bikini wax but less than a Brazilian wax in whatever way that works for you.

What is a Brazilian wax?

A Brazilian by definition is the removal of all hair from the pubic area including the bum. Many women prefer to leave a strip or triangle or perhaps more (see Betweeny wax.)

What should I do before a wax?

Light exfoliation can be very helpful, especially for legs and bikini lines. If your skin is dry, light moisturizer is also a good idea.

What about after my wax?

Post care includes a soothing cream applied by us. If any irritation persists, an anti inflammatory such as hydrocortisone or calendula cream can be used for a day or two.  It is very important to exfoliate on a regular basis, 2-3 times per week following body waxing to avoid ingrown hairs.

Do you wax men?

Yes, except for intimate waxing.

INFRARED SAUNA

What are the benefits of an Infrared Sauna?

Infrared saunas use infrared panels to heat you very gently and slowly, making it a very peaceful experience for most people. The heat is a dry heat and you may find that you do not sweat for the first 10-15 minutes, or not very much at all your first time. With increased usage, you will likely notice an increased ability to sweat more productively. After sweating, you will feel great. You may notice glowing skin, muscle and injury relief as well as an overall sense of relaxation.

The health benefits are as follows:

  • Sweating is good for you. Sweating is one of the body’s safest and most natural ways to heal and maintain good health. And that’s why our sauna is specifically designed to promote a deep, healthy and natural detoxifying sweat.

  • Infrared therapy stimulates the circulatory system, causing the heart to beat more vigorously and blood vessels to dilate, which help cleanse the circulatory system and more fully oxygenate the body’s cells. Better blood circulation means more toxins flow from the cellular level to the skin’s surface to improve cell health, aid in muscle recovery and strengthen the immune system.

  • Another benefit of improved circulation from sauna use is quick muscle recovery after your regular workouts. The increased peripheral circulation from our infrared heat reduces inflammation, decreases pain and speeds healing, all important steps in helping the body recover from strenuous activity.

  • Infrared sauna heat works by penetrating joints, muscles and tissues, increasing circulation and speeding oxygen flow. By reducing soreness on nerve endings, our infrared heat reduces muscle spasms and helps the body heal itself naturally.

  • There is an overall sense of relaxation and calming of the nervous system from sauna use.

Our sauna is a state of the art, two person Sunlighten Infrared Sauna. It offers chromotherapy, a full spectrum of colors for you to choose based on your mood and preferences. There is bluetooth connectivity within the sauna for you to stream your own music or podcasts. The speakers feature Acoustic Resonance Technology which enables you to both gently feel and hear the music, this can be ideal for meditation. We chose to work with Sunlighten Saunas as they are the leaders by far in the industry.  We encourage you to check out their website for more information.

What should I do before and after I sauna?

It is absolutely key that you hydrate a LOT before, during and after your sauna session.  You will be sweating! You must replenish! Electrolyte enhanced waters and drinks can be nice.

How long/how often should I sauna?

The amount of time spent in a sauna session will vary depending upon your tolerance and daily activity level. To get your body accustomed to infrared therapy, start with 10-15 minutes. Gradually increase with every visit towards 40-50 minutes.  Listen to your body. If you begin to feel symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms during your sauna session, exit immediately, grab a cold towel, sit down and hydrate. It is safe and wonderfully beneficial to sauna daily, as many around the world do. You may book as many sessions a week as you’d like.

What should I wear or bring?

We provide large Turkish towels to wrap yourself in as well as plush towels to sit on. Some people like to wear loose, comfortable or yoga type clothes.  There is a small refrigerator stocked with bottles of cold water and cooling aromatherapy towels. You may want to bring one of our plastic cups of cold water into the sauna with you. Additionally, the sauna has bluetooth speakers so if you’d like to play your favorite music or podcast, please do, Electronics are safe in the sauna.

Can I bring a friend?

The sauna is a two person size and bringing a friend or partner can be wonderful. There is no additional cost.

How old do I need to be?

All infrared Sauna guests need to be at least 18 years old. However, ages 12 and up are welcome if accompanied by an adult guardian.

Is there any reason I should not sauna?

If you are pregnant, have a pacemaker or (though very rare) have an inability to sweat, you should not use the sauna.

How do you keep the sauna clean?

We use non toxic cleaners between each guest and encourage guests to use it again if they would like to. Additionally, infrared heat kills 99% of bacteria, creating an inherently sterile environment.

Can I bring in my phone or laptop?

While we want to gently encourage you to unplug and unwind, electronics are safe in the sauna.

LASH LIFTS

What is a Lash Lift?

Lash lifts elongate the lashes rather than just curling them back like lash perming. Lash lifts involve ‘lifting’ the natural lashes up from the base, using a gently-curved, silicone rod which gives the appearance of dramatically longer lashes. This makes them more inclusive for women with shorter lashes who have always turned to extensions.

How long do lash lifts last?

Lash Lifts can last up to 2 to 3 months with proper aftercare.

What is the aftercare for lash lifts?

For the first 24 hours after the treatment, your lashes are still malleable, which means their shape can continue to shift before settling into place. Actions like sleeping on the side of your face and touching the lashes is inadvisable. You should also refrain from getting the lashes wet. This includes avoiding steam, heat, saunas, oils, water, face wash, creams and makeup remover wipes – anything that will add moisture to the lashes.
